In the early 1990s a friend introduced to a brilliant BBC radio producer called Julian May.

I had a number of ideas for radio programs based in Egypt. One of these involved talking to non-Egyptian women who had moved to Cairo to work as belly dancers. At the time this was a highly unusual thing to do and there were only a handful working there.

I had never made a radio program before but after pitching the ideas Julian just lent me a recorder and said off you go. It was an act of kindness and trust I have never forgotten, and so began my career making radio programs for the BBC.

Here is a selection of programs I went on to make mostly for Radio 4 but some, also, for the World Service.
