BURNING MAN

REPORTAGE UK/USA

I first went to Burning Man in 1996 five years after it was founded in the Black Rock desert, Nevada. Back then it was still a relatively underground event attracting around 10,000 revellers. There was also no fence around the site.

In 2005 when I revisited this extraordinary fusion of community, art, music and just about everything else you can possibly imagine, it had ballooned to around 60,000.

But it still blew my mind. And I’m so glad the organisers have managed to resist the temptation to commercialise it. Money is still forbidden. (Except to buy coffee. Well it is America after all!)

I had been commissioned to photograph and write about the event for a number of different magazines.

If you ever get a chance to go. GO. It’s like nothing you have ever experienced before.
