REPORTAGE UK/USA

I’ve always been fascinated by the transgressive. And have explored many sub-cultures in Britain and America.

In 1980 I photographed the first club in Britain which catered for transgender people. Called Friends, it barely qualified as a club and was more a shabby venue where these people could gather without fear of violence or prejudice.

I also photographed, in London, the first sado-masochistic club open to the public. Called Maitresse it was named after the famous 1975 French film of the same name.

Later I was commissioned by the Weekend Guardian magazine to photograph the, then emerging, S and M scene in clubs throughout London in the late 1990s. Unfortunately, after shooting a large body of work the magazine chickened out. Thinking the material too controversial they published tame mock up studio shots instead.
