My career in radio journalism began when a friend introduced me to a brilliant BBC radio producer called Julian May.
I was over flowing with ideas for radio programs based on ideas in the UK, USA and Egypt. One of the first involved non-Egyptian women who had moved to Cairo to work as belly dancers. In the 90s this was a highly unusual thing to do and there were only a handful working there.
Another was the, then emerging, phenomenon of ‘New Age tourists’ paying to mediate in the great pyramid of Giza.
I had never made a radio program before but after pitching the ideas Julian just lent me a recorder and said off you go. It was an act of kindness and trust I have never forgotten.
Here is a selection of programs I went on to make for BBC Radio 4 and the World Service.
Several were selected for ‘Pick of the Week’ a program the BBC airs to feature the best radio programs of the week.
